The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) Sulemana Braimah, has kicked against the directive detailed by the Ghana Law school to students to submit their social media accounts for monitoring.
He said such a directive is “certainly obnoxious interference and restriction.”
“The culture of repression gaining roots everywhere,” he said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law has debunked the reports that members have been instructed to submit their accounts to the school authorities for monitoring.
“The SRC wishes to state that, no such directive has been given to any student by the Management of the Ghana School of Law,” the Council stressed in a press release on Wednesday, November 9.
The Director of the School, Yaw Oppong, at a swearing-in ceremony of new SRC executives, had directed students to submit their social media handles for monitoring for good mannerisms and refined character as law students.
“Everybody will have to provide their social media handles,” he had said.
“We are going to look at it and you will be monitored in terms of conduct. We are required by law to make recommendations. We don’t want to stampede you.”
According to the SRC, Mr. Oppong only emphasized a general warning to the students to succumb to the School’s code of conduct within and outside campus including social media platforms in management’s expectation that many are called to the bar.
The SRC, thus, called on all to ignore the reports.
