La Liga President, Javier Tebas has refused to pay for the license to use goal line technology in La Liga hence the Spanish League will be without the technology.
The Spanish League will be the only top European League without the Goal Line technology. The English Premier League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, and French Ligue 1 will all deploy this technology to make the competition fair and devoid of controversy.
Javier Tebas has refused to pay a fee of £3 million pounds for the Goal Line technology to be deployed in La Liga matches.
Eduardo Iturralde Gonzales, a former international referee who retired in 2012 said: “The Goal Line Technology is given by FIFA in the form of a licence. To obtain this licence, the championship that wants to adopt it must pay FIFA itself a amount of 3.5 million euros. Tebas and La Liga don’t want to spend this money, or at least they don’t want to give it to FIFA“.
This comes despite the Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol match which sparked a lot of controversy following an Antoine Griezman’s goal which the opponent’s denied to be a goal.
In an early 3-0 against relegation side Espanyol, Athletico’s second goal by Antoine Griezman was a bit debatable but the absence of the goal line technology allowed the goal.
The English Premier League were the first among European and Continental Leagues to deploy the Goal Line Technology 9 years ago following Chelsea midfielder, Frank Lampard’s goal which was disallowed in their South Africa 2010 match against Germany. A year after, other European leagues adopted same in their games.

Last weekend, Espanyol shockingly came back in a game which they were three goals down and equalised to make it a 3-3 tie. The goal line technology would have given Espanyol the full three points provided it was deployed.
Following that, the club released a statement after the game, calling for the result to be ‘nullified’ due to Griezmann’s goal which was supposed to be disallowed.
