Asante Kotoko appoints Abdul Karim Zito as Interim Coach and Technical Director

Ghana Premier League side Asante Kotoko has announced the appointment of Abdul Karim Zito as its new Technical Director and Interim Head Coach, pending the appointment of a substantive head coach.

He will be assisted by Prince Yaw Owusu, while Malik Jabir assumes the role of Technical Advisor following the dismissal of Prosper Narteh Ogum as Head Coach on April 21, 2025.

In a statement, the club revealed that these changes are part of major reforms to its technical leadership, aligned with its strategic plan to ensure sustained competitive success.

“Asante Kotoko SC is pleased to announce key changes to the club’s technical leadership as part of an ongoing strategic restructuring. These appointments are part of Asante Kotoko’s renewed commitment to building a strong, visionary technical structure aimed at sustained competitive success.” The statement read.

Coach Zito, a former player and head coach of the club, returns to lead the team on the sidelines while also providing technical direction.

The club touts his experience both at the local and national level, confident his appointment would propel the porcupine warriors to winning ways.

“”A former player and head coach of Asante Kotoko, Coach Zito returns with vast experience from both club and national levels, including guiding Dreams FC to a historic CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and leading Ghana’s U-20 team to the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title.” It read

His assistant, Prince Yaw Owusu, also comes with a rich profile. The club highlighted his 20-year coaching career, during which he developed talents who eventually secured contracts with Italy’s top flight teams.

“Coach Owusu is a seasoned football technician with over two decades of coaching experience across Ghana, Sudan, and the United States. His career includes head coaching roles at Medeama SC, Inter Allies, Khartoum National Club, and the Ghana U-20 national team (Black Satellites), as well as assistant coach of the national U-17 side. Known for his work in player development, Coach Owusu has nurtured talents who have gone on to play for top clubs including AC Milan, Genoa, Sassuolo, and Fiorentina.” The statement read.

Malik Jabir, who previously served as Technical Director, has now been appointed Technical Advisor, tasked with providing strategic guidance to support the club’s long-term objectives.

Asante Kotoko parted ways with Prosper Narteh Ogum after both parties reached a mutual agreement described by the club as being “in the best interest of the club.”

Ogum’s dismissal follows a lackluster performance that saw the club drop from 1st to 4th on the league table, going four consecutive matches without a win, scoring 28 goals and conceding 21.
