I Am Not Yvonne Nelson: Iyanya tells his side of the story

Nigerian Singer/songwriter Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk has finally come out to address the brouhaha of cheating on Yvonne Nelson, which was captured in her memoir ” I am not Yvonne Nelson”.

Iyanya, who is a persona in the memoir of Yvonne Nelson, which has stirred a lot of controversy for the past few weeks, stated clearly in an interview with Foster Aggor on Starr FM’s Drive show that he was ignorant of his name being included in Yvonne Nelson’s book even after she called him to record an endorsement video of the book she was writing.

“She contacted me. She said she was launching a book and she needed a video to endorse the book. I didn’t know I was in the book. I did that because we are cool. When the book came out, I now knew I was in the book.” He said.

He stated that he was circumspect about his conversations on the issue in question as he was empathic about her healing process from the trauma .

“You can’t be serious, I also feel like at the end of the day, she is healing. Let’s not forget that too, that is why I am trying to be very realistic about my conversation. What we all need to understand is that everybody has been through ups and downs and being famous it comes with a territory. Rather than tear her down, I want more open conversation that put out the truth.” He wrote

He further revealed that he was alarmed when he learned how the book had gone viral. He stated that he woke up to lots of missed calls and was briefed on the situation at hand by his friends.

He stated that situations like this have made it difficult for him to be in a relationship, as there is the tag of a cheater on him.

“For people like me, I’m trying to move past this phase of my life where I’m being called a cheater or I broke somebody’s heart that has made it even harder for me to be in a relationship. I’m still single now because it’s hard for anyone to believe what I will say.” He said.

He remarked that if he is ever going to come out with a book, he will not take the route of calling names but will channel it into articulating the challenges he has encountered in life.

Prior to this interview, he tweeted that his side of the story should be anticipated since an immediate reply will bring on accusations of slut shaming .

“Y’all waiting for my side of the story? If I talk now, I’ll be accused of kissing and telling, sluts shaming Etc. But something gat to give, so wait for it.- its iyanyaaaaaa???? (@lyanya)”

Yvonne Nelson accused Iyanya of cheating on her with Tontoh Dikeh and she wasn’t perturbed enough as she accepted her loss and moved on after learning it was his pattern of life.
