Baet Lamad Young African Scholars’ Program (BLYAP) is an intensive and enriching online course designed for Young African students planning to pursue higher education abroad (USA and Canada) who wish to make a meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.
Participants will receive practical guidance on university admissions and career path options and join a network of brilliant young leaders from across Africa on the same path. Following the program, students will be paired with expert mentors who will guide them throughout the university application process.
The four-month program is structured such that after completion, participants will be ready with all relevant documents to apply to top USA and Canadian schools by September 2023.
The course will tackle in detail the following salient aspects of the study abroad application process.
How to search for schools that fit (five top schools per participant)
How to secure funding and scholarships
How to prepare stellar application materials, including; Statement of Purpose/ Personal Statements or autobiographical essays, common app essay prompts, Diversity Statements, writing samples, scholarship letters, CV/Resume, recommendation letters
How to contact and convince prospective supervisors to work with you (Ph.D. students)
How to strike an engaging communication with Admission counselors
How to complete schools application forms with confidence and without errors
One-on-One time with instructors throughout the application process
In addition to the above, the course will also teach students how to settle into the US and Canadian education systems. It will also explore life and career opportunities after graduation. Note that even after the course, all participants will have the chance to be guided in the school application process.
Structure
This is an intensive course online; as such, all courses will be taught via zoom. The cohort will meet three times a month to go through course materials and assigned projects. All content is practical and hands-on, designed such that all who follow each step diligently would indirectly be preparing their own application with expert feedback from instructors. Participants can expect a collegial working environment where all will work together towards getting into top schools in the US and Canada.
Please note that the 4 months is not just to help you identify your interests, the top five schools to apply to, and prepare all your application materials. There is more work to be done after the 4 months, which includes the actual applications for schools. SO, THIS IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM.

Eligibility Requirements
Must be an African
Must have graduated or will graduate by August 2023 from an accredited institution
Must have an excellent academic background. At least a 3.0 GPA out of 4.0 or better
High school graduates must have a strong average with a B3 or better in English
Must be genuinely interested in studying abroad and that alone (Bachelor, Master, Ph.D.)
Must be willing to work cooperatively with others, especially Instructors
Must have a reliable internet access to attend all classes
