The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will inaugurate the inaugural Democracy Cup on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium within Parliament House in Accra.
The Democracy Cup has been established by Parliament as part of the activities celebrating 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
This commemoration follows the theme, “30 Years of Parliamentary Democracy Under the 4th Republic: The Journey Thus Far.”
The Democracy Cup series aims to unite sports enthusiasts from across the country.
More importantly, it seeks to leverage football as a means for Parliament to engage with citizens and foster broader participation in the legislative process.
The competition will feature a match between two premier league giants, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, on Friday, July 5, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium. The winner will have the opportunity to play against the United States-based club, DC United, in Washington later this year.
The launch event will be attended by Members of Parliament, media personnel, and officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), alongside other stakeholders.
Additionally, there will be a special curtain-raiser match between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players.
Other activities planned to commemorate the anniversary include mock parliamentary sittings and debates, peace walks, and fun games designed to engage the public and highlight the importance of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
