Striking nurses at Manhyia Hospital call off strike

The striking nurses at the Manhyia District Hospital have returned to work following the intervention by the Ministry of Health.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association went on strike on Friday, December 2 following the strange behavior of the Ashanti Region Boss of the National Service Scheme, Alex Opoku-Mensah,

This unfortunate incident was despite the suspended Opoku-Mensah, tabled to face a committee set up to probe the allegations of assault against him.

The committee was made up of the management of the Scheme following an emergency meeting on Wednesday, November 30.

This development comes with the birth of allegations that Mr. Opoku-Mensah verbally assaulted a nurse, on phone, at the Manhyia District Hospital.

Meanwhile, a leaked tape of the heated banter between Mr. Opoku-Nensah and the nurse, who treats his daughter at the hospital, finds him casting insults at the nurse in question.

The nurse is said to have queried Mr. Opoku-Mensah’s daughter, a junior doctor, to review her prescription for a patient.

The Ashanti Region NSS Director has since rendered an unqualified apology for his conduct, claiming it is not his mannerisms to insult.

“This has never been my style but for a genuine reason to mediate a persistent issue between my daughter(Doctor) and a colleague nurse who I as well consider my daughter.

“I do apologize for any mishap and assure all, there shall not be a repetition of such. I look forward to maintaining a cordial relationship with any affected person.”

But the committee comprising representatives from the NSS, the Public Services Commission, and the Ministry of Education has been constituted to probe the matter and give feedback within one month.
