Tottenham Hotspur has signed Leicester City midfielder James Madison on a five-year deal valid until 2028 for an agreed fee of £40 million.
The Spurs have dashed Newcastle’s hopes of signing the English midfielder after Leicester rerouted his career, allowing him to join any team after they fell below the relegation belt last season.
The club joyfully announced his signing in a tweet “We are delighted to announce the signing of James Maddison. Let’s go Madders”
He joins the likes of Gugliemo Vicario and Dejan Kuluvseski, who signed a permanent deal with Tottenham after an impressive 18-month loan stint.Maddison joined Leicester in 2018 from Norwich and has since given impressive stats, rating him as the best attacking midfielder in the English top flight.
He made 203 appearances at King Power Stadium with the Foxes and netted 55 goals to his credit.He won the2021/ 2022 FA Cup and Community Shield at Leicester and was named the club’s Player of the season and won the Premier league goal of the season in the month of September 2020 with an impressive 18 goals and 12 assists.
He rounded up the 2022–2023 season with 10 goals and nine assists amidst the team’s limbo in the league table, which made them sink to the Championship.
Tottenham’s prime star, Harry Kane, whose future at the club is not certain, still holds the No. 10 jersey; hence, Maddission’s jersey number is yet to be revealed, contingent on Kane’s future at the club.
Maddison is an addition to the midfield at Tottenham, which is a priority for manager Ange Postecoglou.
The 26-year-old made his professional debut in August 2014 after he began his career with Coventry City.He got his call-up to Gareth Southgate’s English squad in October 2018 and made his debut in the UEFA Euro 2020 against Montenegro in November 2019. He joined the English team for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and also played in the 2024 Euro qualifying match against Ukraine at Wembley.
The 2017–2018 season was bliss for Maddisson, as he bagged a few honors to his name. He was named the Championship Young Player of the Month in January 2018 and the Championship Goal of the Month in September 2017 and January 2018. He got his name on the PFA Team of the Year as well as the Championship.
