A fierce move by the military to nab supposedly enskinned Bawku Naba and the Overlord of Mamprugu at Nalerigu at midnight was circumvented by angry youth after they clashed with the soldiers.
Available reports indicate the youth in their teeming numbers who had promised to resist any arrest had taken over the palaces of the two chiefs resulting in the clash.
The military subsequently pulled back.
The attempt by the soldiers comes on the back of a warrant issued by a High Court in Bolgatanga for the apprehension of the two traditional leaders for masterminding the enskinment of a new chief on Wednesday.
The government through the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a press release on February 15, said the act is a national security violation.
“The Government condemns developments in Nalerigu today February 15, 2023, concerning the purported enskinment of a new Bawku Naba as illegal and a threat to National Security”.
“Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the Bawku Naba, duly gazetted and a member of the National and Upper East Regional Houses of Chiefs,” the statement stressed
The statement further ordered the security agencies to arrest and prosecute any other person who has coronated himself as a Bawku Naba.
